Former Ottawa Senators forward Alex Formenton is suing the player agent firm Newport Sports Management Inc and its former representative, Wade Arnott, for the tidy sum of $20.5 million.
According to what the TSN network has learned, Formenton is suing them for negligence, breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty, all in connection with the contractual dispute which opposed him to the Senators in 2022 and which had forced him to go continue his career in Switzerland in December of the same year.
The 25-year-old Ontarian holds his former agents responsible for a loss of income for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 National Hockey League (NHL) seasons, as well as a loss of future income.
According to court documents, Newport and Arnott are accused by the player of failing to represent him in a manner that meets the standards expected of professional agents. The skater believes he was poorly advised and misinformed during his fall 2022 contractual dispute with the Senators organization.
Then, Formenton also believes he was poorly advised during his agreement with the Ambri-Piotta team in Switzerland, particularly regarding the repercussions it could have on a potential attempt to return to the NHL.
The Sens’ second-round pick in the 2017 draft left the Swiss team in January of this year, also ending his association with Newport and Arnott.
Shortly after, he was named among five players accused of sexual assault in the 2018 Canada Junior Team case.
Since then, Formenton, who amassed 39 points in 109 games in the NHL, seems to have given up on hockey. He now works in the construction field.
Newport Sports Management Inc and Wade Arnott have not yet offered any comment in connection with this lawsuit.
