Revengeful English women. The French Women’s Team actually hosts England as part of the fourth day of the Qualifiers counting for Euro 2025. A meeting which could allow Hervé Renard’s daughters to secure their ticket for the European competition in the event of of victory. However, halfway through and just a few days after their stunning victory against the reigning European champions and vice-world champions, the Blues are in more than a tough situation.
England not here to laugh
The French Women’s Team will quickly get their foot on the ball and will narrowly miss opening the scoring on the first real opportunity of the game. In the sixth minute of play, Sakina Karchaoui overflows on her left side and crosses hard at the penalty spot. Kadidiatou Diani throws himself while tackling the ball and hits the target. The Blues are in control but will concede a first big opportunity at the start of the second quarter of an hour. Russo, however, fails to find the target. Five minutes later, on a superb counter-attack, Mead enters Pauline Peyraud-Magnin’s area and crosses her shot. It is repelled by the French goalkeeper. In the process, England will open the scoring. The ball arrives at Hemp after a good effort from Russo. Stanway is found at the edge of the area and sends a heavy shot from mid-height which ends up in the back of the net.
The Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in Saint-Étienne will then see Hervé Renard’s daughters fall back against the reigning European champions and vice-world champions. At the half-hour mark, Bronze was found by a brilliant opening from captain Williamson before putting in a touch at the far post. Russo emerges and sends a header which pushes Pauline Peyraud-Magnin to make another save! In the 34th minute, the Lionesses will take the break. Hemp has plenty of time to cross after being shifted by Mead. Russo places an unstoppable header and already allows the British to lead by two goals. The Blues are not there at all in this first period and will not succeed in restarting the game just before half-time. We will have to do much better in the second half to hope to turn the tide. As was the case in the first leg.
