MLB summary for May 31, 2024: Davis Schneider closes the debate in the 14th inning for the Blue Jays

Davis Schneider hit the decisive home run in the 14th inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday at Rogers Centre.

Cavan Biggio was on third base as a phantom runner when Schneider sent the ball over the fence with two outs on the clock. He took the first pitch, a fast one, which he sent into the bullpen in right-center field for his seventh homer of the season.

“I think we’re putting the pieces together,” Schneider said. We have the talent. It’s more about putting it all together. »

Biggio also tied the game 3-3 in the 12th inning on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Kiermaier to keep the Jays in the game.

Reliever Genesis Cabrera (2-1) retired all five batters facing him to record the victory and help the Blue Jays (27-29) extend their winning streak to four.

Andrew McCutchen and Nick Gonzales both had two hits in the loss for the Pirates (26-31).

After an uneventful 10th inning, both teams scored a point in the 11th, then another in the 12th.

Jays starter Jose Berrios allowed six hits and one run in seven-plus innings. He struck out five batters and lowered his earned run average to 2.78.

Pirates left-hander Bailey Falter handcuffed the Jays’ offense, shutting them out for six innings, allowing only a single to Ernie Clement in the third and another to Kevin Kiermaier in the sixth.
