After the ouster of Michel Der Zakarian on Sunday after the big 5-0 defeat against Marseille, Montpellier is looking for a new coach and the name of Jean-Louis Gasset was checked by Laurent Nicollin.
A well-known face from Ligue 1 already back? Michel Der Zakarian sidelined after Sunday’s rout against OM (0-5), Montpellier is looking for a new coach. Jean-Louis Gasset (70 years old) is Laurent Nicollin’s preferred lead at the moment. The former coach of Bordeaux and Saint-Etienne was present on Sunday at La Mosson alongside Ghislain Printant.
Jean-Louis Gasset has already officiated twice at the head of the MHSC in 1998-1999 then in 2017. The 70-year-old coach had announced his intention to no longer coach after his last stint on a bench, at the head of OM during last season.
The sad record of the MHSC
“Sunday is the last match of my career,” he announced before OM-HAC on May 17. “That I stay in football, that people use my experience, my ideas and my networks is a possibility. I don’t know how to garden, I won’t have anything to do. But as a coach, it’s over. My decision is final.”
In great difficulty since the start of the season, Montpellier is currently last in Ligue 1 with 4 points, two points behind Toulouse, its next opponent, the first non-relegation with 6 points. More worrying, the MHSC only scored 8 goals for 26 goals conceded.
Jean-Louis Gasset has coached many Ligue 1 teams in his career and took over Olympique Marseille on February 20, after the failure of Gennaro Gattuso. Having passed through Montpellier, Caen, PSG, Istres, Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux, he would therefore have yet another experience in the French championship, after almost 40 years of career as a coach behind him. On condition that he accepts the Montpellier challenge that seems to be offered to him.
