The Martinican will have “consultant functions”. He will notably take care of the development of the club’s youth sector.

Former French international Raphaël Varane will, less than a month after ending his sporting career, join the board of directors of Como, his last team, the Serie A club announced on Saturday.

“Raphaël Varane joins the Como board of directors with consultant functions for the development of the youth sector, for education and for innovation”, explained the promoted in his press release. Varane, 31, will work with those responsible for the training and educational program for young players. The Martinican will also have a role in the development of the Lombard club’s marketing.

“We are delighted to welcome Raphaël to our board of directors. His successes combined with his interest in youth training and education are in line with our objectives for the future of our club,” welcomed Mirwan Suwarso, the representative of the Indonesian owner of Como. Within the board of directors, Varane will rub shoulders with another West Indian former Blue, Thierry Henry.

2018 world champion, Varane announced on September 25 that he was ending his career. The defender, winner of the Champions League four times with Real Madrid, his club from 2011 to 2021, and spent by (2010-11) and Manchester United (2021-24), will have only made one appearance with Como in a friendly match this summer, before getting injured.

Before the 8th day of the Italian Championship this weekend, Como, coached by former Spanish international Cesc Fabregas, occupies 14th place in Serie A with eight points.
