German coach Thomas Tuchel will succeed Gareth Southgate at the head of the English team from January 1, 2025, the English Association (FA) announced on Wednesday.

The 51-year-old technician has been without a club since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season. He has previously worked in England with Chelsea, as well as a number of English players, including captain Harry Kane, who he recruited from Bayern Munich. The German becomes England’s third foreign coach after Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson and Italian Fabio Capello. He will be assisted by the Englishman Anthony Barry.
The decision to recruit Tuchel and Barry was approved by the FA board early last week, and Tuchel signed his contract on Tuesday October 8, the FA said in a statement, noting that the announcement was delayed in order to “minimize distractions” in the just concluded international camp.
The two men will start working on January 1, 2025, before the qualifying phase for the following year’s World Cup, which will take place in Canada, Mexico and the United States, the federation said without specifying the duration of the CONTRACT. In the meantime, Lee Carsley will continue to act as interim manager until and including the November rally, during which the “Three Lions” selection will complete its group stage in the Nations League.
