“A Grand Slam, my deep motivation”: Nick Kyrgios announces his return to the ATP circuit

Fancy Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios plans to make his return to the courts in Abu Dhabi in December, with the aim of winning a Grand Slam and “silence” those who doubt him. The former world number 13 has played just one singles match on the ATP Tour in two years, after suffering knee, foot and wrist injuries.

The 29-year-old, who last met in June 2023, has repeatedly hinted he will retire, but told News Corp’s Code Sports show on Monday he would return for the tournament exhibition of the World Tennis League in December before trying his luck at the Australian Open in January.

“I come back because there is something that keeps me in the game,” says the man who gained a reputation for his outbursts of anger and his nervous breakdowns in the middle of a match at the start of his career. I’ve beaten virtually everyone put in front of me, I’ve made it to the final of a Grand Slam, I’ve won a doubles title at a Grand Slam, I’ve won multiple titles, and I’ve won money. »

Not enough, however, to get people to talk about him well and forget his recurring escapades. So, the solution is found. “I think the only thing I’m aiming for now is a Grand Slam,” adds the Canberra native. I think it’s the only thing that will finally shut people up. This will be my deep motivation. »

Kyrgios, who worked as a TV commentator during his absence, reached his only Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon in 2022, losing in four sets to Serbian Novak Djokovic.
