For his part, Patrick Rahmen sees this transfer as “a big opportunity to take a new step in his career”. If his career as a player has been very discreet, the Basel resident has already accumulated numerous experiences on the bench. After coaching the under-18s and under-21s of FC Basel, he followed head coach Thorsten Fink to Hamburg, to become his assistant.

The beautiful Winterthur route

In Switzerland, he managed Aarau for two seasons, before returning to Basel, where he was first Ciriaco Sforza’s assistant, then head coach. In 2023, he led the Swiss under-21 team to the quarter-finals of the Euro in Hungary. After several mixed performances, she was eliminated by Spain after extra time.

For his first season with Winterthur and his limited means, Patrick Rahmen has obtained 13 victories and 19 points in 35 games so far. The club thus qualified for the group which is competing for the title and qualifications for European competitions, unlike much richer teams. At Schützenwiese, his assistant Ognjen Zaric, aged 35, will succeed him.

Despite a disappointing season, which led to the dismissal of coach Raphaël Wicky last March, everything indicates that Young Boys will once again be Swiss champions in the coming days. The Bernese club remains by far the most powerful in the country. Only one of the last five titles has escaped him.
