Flames beat Canucks

Connor Zary made a great individual play in overtime Wednesday night to give the Calgary Flames a 6-5 victory in a completely crazy game against the Vancouver Canucks.

The Canucks took a 4-1 lead after one period of play, but the Flames scored four unanswered goals to lead 5-4.

Then with less than two minutes left in the third period, defenseman Quinn Hughes blocked a shot from Mikael Backlund towards an empty net and then handed the puck to JT Miller who tied the game 5-5.

Anthony Mantha, Martin Pospisil, Rasmus Andersson and Zary all had a goal and an assist in the win. Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar also found the back of the net. Nazem Kadri collected two assists.

On the losing side, Brock Boeser scored two goals while Quinn Hughes had two assists. Conor Garland, Daniel Sprong and Miller, who added an assist, scored the other goals.

Dan Vladar stopped 20 of 25 shots thrown his way for the victory. His opposite number, Arturs Silovs, blocked 20 out of 26 shots.

Jets shut out Connor McDavid and Oilers 6-0

Mason Appleton had a goal and two assists to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the Edmonton Oilers 6-0 in the season opener for both teams.

Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves to record 38e whitewashing his career.

Adam Lowry and Mark Scheifele each had a goal and an assist for the Jets while Nino Niederreiter and Josh Morrissey each had two assists.

Rasmus Kupari, Dylan Samberg and Kyle Connor also found the back of the net for Team Manitoba.

It was not the start hoped for for the Oilers who were eliminated in seven games in the Stanley Cup final last year by the Florida Panthers.

The Golden Knights win an offensive festival

Ivan Barbashev, Mark Stone and Victor Olofsson each scored twice to help the Vegas Golden Knights defeat the Colorado Avalanche 8-4.

Barbashev also had two assists while his linemate Jack Eichel had four. Shea Theodore was an accomplice on three goals for his team.

Goaltender Adin Hill stopped 28 shots to get the victory.

In the loss, Mikko Rantanen scored a hat trick while Casey Mittelstadt scored the other Avalanche goal.

Samuel Girard, Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar each had two assists.

Alexandar Georgiev made just 11 saves, but his replacement Justus Annunen didn’t fare any better, blocking only two of the four shots he faced.

Rangers win by shutout

Connor Zary made a great individual play in overtime Wednesday night to give the Calgary Flames a 6-5 victory in a completely crazy game against the Vancouver Canucks.

Igor Shesterkin was perfect in front of 29 shots and the New York Rangers blanked the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-0 to open their season on Wednesday night.

Shesterkin, who reportedly turned down a lucrative $11 million per season contract extension, became the first Rangers goalie since Gump Worsley in 1956 to record a shutout in their season opener.

It was the 16the career shutout for the 28-year-old Russian, who had four during the last campaign.

Chris Kreider scored twice for the reigning Metropolitan Division champions. Alexis Lafrenière, who added an assist, Sam Carrick, Filip Chytil and Vincent Trocheck also threaded the needle in a winning cause.

Artemi Panarin and Jacob Trouba both finished the game with two assists for the Rangers, who defeated the Penguins for the fifth time in their last six games.

Tristan Jarry gave up six times in 41 shots in front of the Penguins cage. Sidney Crosby was shut out in the first game of his 20e season in Pittsburgh.
