“It’s been a dream come true”: Rafael Nadal announces he will retire after the Davis Cup (VIDEO)

In a video posted on his social networks, the man with 22 Grand Slam tournaments confirmed that he would hang up his racket after the Davis Cup which he will play in Spain. “I have had a difficult last two years. It was obviously a difficult decision to make. But everything has a beginning and an end in life. And now is the right time. My career has been long and much more accomplished than I expected.”

Before continuing. “I am very happy that my last tournament will be the Davis Cup, under the colors of my country. I’m coming full circle because one of my first fond memories in the world of tennis was the 2004 final in Seville. I feel very lucky to have known everything I have known“.

Without forgetting his lifelong rivals. “I want to thank them, I spent so many hours with them. I experienced moments that I will never forget.”

The former world number one then had a tight throat when talking about his team and his family. “My team has been a very important part of my career. They are friends and they have always been there for me. My mother made all the sacrifices so that we didn’t lack anything. I thank my wife, with whom I have been for 19 years. She was my ideal travel partner. My sister too, with whom I have a special relationship. My uncle, Toni. It’s thanks to him that I started tennis. Finally, my father. He was an inspiration in every sense of the word. That was my example.”

Finally, the man with 14 victories at Roland-Garros has a thought for his fans.” I don’t have enough words to thank you. You always gave me the energy I needed. It’s been a dream come true. I leave with peace of mind, certain that I have given my all. Many thanks to everyone and see you soon.”

The Davis Cup final will take place from November 19 to 24 in Malaga.
