According to what ESPN network analyst Kevin Weekes reports on his X account (formerly Twitter), the 28-year-old Russian would have refused a gargantuan offer of eight years and $88 million from the New York club.

If he had accepted this agreement, he would have become the highest paid goalie in history at $11 million per year, beating Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens who signed an eight-year, $84 million contract in July 2017. .

Since his arrival in the Bettman circuit during the 2019-2020 season, Shesterkin has quickly established himself as one of the best players in the world at his position. He has won 135 of the 213 games he has played since the start of his career, while maintaining an excellent save percentage of 0.921.

Last season, he collected 36 victories in 55 games in addition to registering four shutouts. He maintained a goals against average of 2.56 and an efficiency rate of 0.913.

The Rangers’ fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft will play the final year of his four-year contract that pays him $5.66 million annually during the upcoming campaign.

If the two clans cannot reach an agreement by July 1, Shesterkin will become an uncompensated free agent.
