NHL: Rangers goaltender reportedly declined $88 million offer for 8 years

Igor Shesterkin knows its value and he seems determined to monetize it.

According to ESPN network informant Kevin Weekes, the goaltender who could become an unrestricted free agent next summer would have declined an offer of $88 million for eight years. With an average annual salary of $11 million, the Russian would have become the highest paid goalie in NHL history.

Last June, the New York Post claimed that Shesterkin’s camp was looking for a contract that would bring in an average of $12 million per year.

Former Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price currently holds the NHL record with an eight-year pact that earns him $10.5 million per season. Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning follows with an annual salary of $9.5 million.

Negotiations between the star player and the Rangers continue. Shesterkin is about to begin his sixth season with the Rangers. Since his debut, he has signed 135 victories in 203 starts, posting a goals against average of 2.43 and an impressive save percentage of .921.
