Improbable scenario in Bundesliga 2, two penalties whistled for balls picked up by hand

Two defenders in the Bundesliga 2 match between Magbdeburg and Greuther Fürth each conceded a penalty by grabbing the ball in their hands.

Amazing things are happening in the German second division. On the occasion of the 8th day of Bundesliga 2, Sunday October 6, Magbdeburg (2nd) and Greuther Fürth (10th) parted with a score of 2-2 at the end of a scenario that was surprising to say the least. In turn, the two teams benefited from a penalty for balls picked up by hand.

It all started in the 13th minute, when Greuther Fürth goalkeeper Nahuel Noll played a hand ball on his defender Gideon Jung. Stunned, the latter grabbed the ball with both hands, probably thinking that it was a six-yarder and that it was his task to make the clearance.

Missed penalty

Referee Bastian Dankert quite logically whistled a foul and penalty, unlike his colleague Glenn Nyberg who had angered Thomas Tuchel during the Champions League quarter-final first leg between Arsenal and Bayern Munich last season for a similar situation.

With his particular run-up reminiscent of that of Bruno Fernandes, Mohammed El Hankouri was responsible for taking this penalty for Magdeburg. An attempt diverted by the goalkeeper! Except that the ball returned to the feet of an opposing attacker, who allowed Mohammed El Hankouri to catch up and open the scoring at the last minute.

Then in the 41st minute, French defender Jean Hugonet made a very daring tackle on Roberto Massimo at the entrance to the Magdeburg area. Everyone expected a foul to be called. Even before the referee could stop the game, Daniel Heber grabbed the ball, dying in the zone of truth, to place it at the location of the expected free kick. However, the action was still in progress. A penalty was therefore awarded. And it was indeed transformed, at one time, by Julian Green.
