Dortmund dismisses an ineffective PSG to reach the final

Like last year, there will be a Swiss in the Champions League final. After Manuel Akanji with Manchester City, Gregor Kobel will also try to lift the big-eared cup on June 1st. The Zurich goalkeeper has overcome the obstacle of the semi-finals with Borussia Dortmund, winner of their double confrontation against PSG.

The German club has reinforced his – short – advantage acquired at home last week by winning by the same score this Tuesday at the Parc des Princes (0-1). Mats Hummels, from a corner, scored the only goal of the match at the start of the second period (50th).

Winner of the Champions League in 1997, Borussia Dortmund will play the third final in its history in the competition, eleven years after the previous one. In 2013, the team then led by Jürgen Klopp lost to Bayern Munich (1-2). An opponent that he could still find in a month, if the Bavarians qualify at the expense of Real Madrid, this Wednesday, in the other semi-final of this 2024 edition (2-2 in the first leg).

Paris and the curse of amounts

Were Parisians paralyzed by the issue? In front of a white-hot gala audience, they gave a performance unworthy of the event for a long time. Appearing timid and lacking inspiration, they did not worry the opposing rearguard in the first half.

Grouped together and leaving the initiative of the game to PSG, Dortmund managed their advantage without batting an eyelid and could have opened the scoring in the 35th minute if Gianluigi Donnarumma had not intervened in front of Karim Adeyemi, who had started on the counterattack.

The first clear opportunity for Paris came after returning from the locker room, when Warren Zaire-Emery hit Kobel’s left post at close range (47th). The beginning of a curse, we’ll come back to that. In the process, Hummels cooled the atmosphere by deceiving Donnarumma with a header on a corner taken by Julian Brandt.

With its back to the wall, PSG was slow to emerge from its lethargy. Nuno Mendes did trigger a burst at the hour mark, with a dry strike at the entrance to the area which made the post tremble again (61st), but we had to wait until the last ten minutes to see the players of Luis Enrique rushes to attack. Kobel then had to work in front of Mbappé (81st), before being saved twice by his crossbar, on attempts by Mbappé again (86th) and Vitinha, from afar (88th).

Four amounts reached on Tuesday, which are added to the two from last Wednesday in Germany: this reveals a crippling lack of efficiency at this level of competition.
