Through the NHL: news from the Senators, Artemi Panarin and Max Pacioretty

Brady Tkachuk, Thomas Chabot and Tim Stützle were all on the ice for the Ottawa Senators’ practice Thursday morning after leaving Tuesday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Tkachuk and Stützle did not return in the third period due to upper body injuries while Chabot left the game as a precaution.

Stützle was hit hard by Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj midway through the second period. The German was skating towards the offensive zone when Xhekaj hit him high. He suffered a cut on the face after a blow from his own stick. Xhekaj received a five-minute major penalty and was ejected from the match.

However, striker David Perron and goalkeeper Mads Sogaard were absent during Thursday’s session.

The Senators will play two more preparatory games. The first will be Friday night against the Detroit Red Wings and they will face the Canadiens on Saturday.

Panarin is absent on Thursday

New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin is not on the ice for practice and is being assessed daily due to a lower body injury.

He left Tuesday’s game against the New Jersey Devils during the first period. It was the second time he left a preseason game due to injury.

Panarin had the best season of his career in 2023-24, scoring 49 goals and 120 points in 82 games.

Aged 31, he is entering his sixth season with the Rangers.

A final audition for Pacioretty?

Max Pacioretty and Easton Cowan are among the players who will be in the lineup for Thursday’s preseason game against the Red Wings.

Aged 35, Pacioretty signed a professional tryout with the Leafs and is trying to break into the lineup for the start of the season.

In two games so far during training camp, the former CH captain has collected two goals and an assist.

The Leafs will conclude their preparatory schedule on Saturday against these same Wings before starting their 2024-25 campaign against the Canadiens on Wednesday, October 9.
