Gasperini praises the Marseillais… and the Vélodrome

Gian Piero Gasperini, coach of Atalanta Bergamo, was delighted with the draw won in Marseille (1-1) against a team that he found strong in a Vélodrome which amazed him.

Atalanta Bergamo left Marseille with a draw (1-1) after leading on Thursday in the semi-final first leg of the Europa League. But for Gian Piero Gasperini, Italian coach, this is an excellent result given the domination of OM, whose performance he praised. He also congratulated his players for getting through it without losing in view of the scenario and the crazy atmosphere of the Vélodrome.

“I knew OM and I expected that”

“It’s good to leave this field undefeated. It’s a very positive result because OM have been strong. They have only lost once at home this season, against PSG, and we understood why this evening”, declared the Italian technician at a press conference.

“We scored a great goal (by Gianluca Scamacca), an important goal, on a great action. We will need a Scamacca at his best to hope to get through this round. Tonight it wasn’t easy, they defended well “We didn’t find enough continuity in attack,” he added. “The players were good. It wasn’t easy with Kolasinac’s quick exit. We were courageous, we stayed high. That stopped them from being more dangerous, even if they had chances.”

“A wonderful stadium”

“I knew OM and I expected that. I saw them win against Benfica or score four goals at Villarreal. They don’t have the same continuity in the league but that’s what I expected” , he also explained.

The former technician from Crotone, Genoa and Palermo, concluded his speech with a word about the Vélodrome, which amazed him. “It’s a wonderful stadium, very beautiful. The noise, what he gives to his team… It gives them something more. We suffered but we played with personality and it wasn’t easy in this atmosphere”, concluded Gasperini.
