The Nigeria Football Federation has named former Nigerian international Finidi George as the new national team coach, replacing Portugal’s José Peseiro, ending weeks of speculation, the body announced in a statement on Monday. April 29.

The appointment of George at the head of the Super Eagles, proposed by a technical committee, was validated Monday by the board of directors of the FAF, specifies the press release.

George, 53, spent 20 months as Peseiro’s deputy until the Portuguese voluntarily left the post after leading Nigeria to the Africa Cup of Nations final in Ivory Coast recently (loss 2 -1 against the Elephants).

The former Ajax winger will be tasked with qualifying the Super Eagles for the 2026 World Cup starting with matches against South Africa in Uyo and Benin in Abidjan next June. Nigeria are required to win both matches as they occupy third place in Group C of the African campaign, behind Rwanda and South Africa.

George, who has 62 caps with the Super Eagles, is part of Nigeria’s “golden generation” which won the 1994 CAN in Tunisia.
