After the gold medal at the Olympic Games in rugby 7s, young girls and boys from the north of the Hautes-Alpes department signed up en masse to play rugby.

The 2024 Olympic Games effect is being felt in the Briançonnais rugby school. After the gold medal in rugby 7s, young girls and boys from the north of the Hautes-Alpes department have signed up en masse to play the oval ball.

A hundred children registered

This year, they will be able to benefit from a brand new pitch which has been long awaited by club members such as Rémy Castrejon, head of the Pays Briançonnais rugby school.

“We have a fantastic, magnificent ground with a very welcoming structure in a magnificent landscape. I have been at the club for forty years and we have been impatiently waiting for this new ground for forty years,” he told BFM DICI.

Once the field is finished, all that remains is to build the changing rooms. That didn’t stop twelve-year-old Esteban from signing up for his favorite sport. “I wanted to get into rugby because I like being with my team,” he explains to BFM DICI.

For Axelle, a 12-year-old rugby player, it was the values ​​of the sport that attracted her. “There is a lot of respect in rugby and in sport, respect like that is a bit rare,” explains the young girl.

With around a hundred children registered, the numbers are increasing according to Rémy Castrejon. “We have been constantly progressing for four years with the associations forum which allows us to recruit quite a few people and also the school environment”, specifies the head of the rugby school

With nearly three hundred members in total, the Rugby Club du Pays Briançonnais is really on a roll at the start of the year.
