EBy winning 0-2 at Anderlecht on Tuesday night in a matchday 5 of the Jupiler Pro League, Genk won a fifth consecutive league victory and took the lead in the standings. Mujaid Sadick and Noah Adedeji-Sternberg scored the goals for Limburg.

After seven games, Genk leads the standings with 16 points, three more than Club Bruges. Anderlecht, who are on a third match without a win and have suffered their first defeat of the season, are fourth (12 points).

Genk got themselves a penalty in the fifth minute of play, Mathias “Zanka” Jorgensen hitting Tolu Arokodare with the tip of his foot in his box. Jarne Steuckers was however prevented from opening the score by a double save from Colin Coosemans (7th). Genk continued to push, but Arokodare completely missed his shot, alone in front of the empty goal, on a cross from Yira Sor (9th). Helped by Brussels’ passivity, the Limburgers controlled the game until scoring (37th, 0-1). On a corner taken at the near post by Steuckers, Bryan Heynen deflected his header to Sadick, who beat Coosemans with his chest. Just before the break, Arokodare missed another big chance, alone in front of Coosemans (45th + 4).

In the second half, Anderlecht got back on the ball but failed to create any dangerous opportunities. For Genk, Sor missed the target, launched alone in front of the purple goal (69th). The Genkois finally made the break at the end of regulation time, Hyeon-Gyu Oh recovering the ball on the shoulder in front of Zanka and quickly passing to Adedeji-Sternberg, who pushed the ball into the empty goal (86th, 0-2).

On the occasion of the 8th day, the Mauves will return to Lotto Park for the reception of Charleroi on Sunday and Genk will receive Dender on Saturday.
