The first day of the group stage of the 2024 Davis Cup delivered these first results.
In Group A, whose matches are taking place in Bologna (Italy), the Belgian team beat the Netherlands 2 points to 1. Despite the point logically offered by Botic Van de Zandschulp who beat Raphael Collignon 7-5, 7-6 (8/6), Belgium won thanks to Zizou Bergs who beat Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 6-7 (2/7), 6-3 then thanks to the Gillé/Vliegen pair who beat the Koolhof/Van de Zandschulp (NED) pair 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4. Belgium is therefore at the top of Group A.
In Zhuhai (China) in Group C, Germany has a comfortable 3-0 win over Slovakia. Maximilian Marterer logically beat Lukas Klein 6-4, 7-5 before Yannick Haufmann gave his country victory by beating Josef Kovalik 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3). The Krawietz/Puetz pair beat the Klein/Zelenay pair for honour 7-5, 6-3. Finally, in Group D, in one of the most prestigious matches of the day, Canada easily beat Argentina 2 points to 1 in Manchester. Denis Shapovalov first created a surprise by beating Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-3 before Félix Auger-Aliassime finished the job by beating Sebastian Baez 6-3, 6-3. The Argentine doubles pair Gonzalez/Molteni finally beat the pair Pospisil/Shapovalov 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Among Wednesday’s matches, Carlos Alcaraz’s Spain will make their debut in Group B against the Czech Republic. Italy will host Brazil in Group A, the United States will face Chile in Group C and Great Britain will host Finland in Group D.
