The Ligue 1 match between AS Saint-Étienne and Olympique de Marseille, Sunday evening at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, was marked by a massive use of pyrotechnic devices. In total, no less than 450 smoke bombs and smoke pots were lit by Saint-Etienne supporters, causing thick smoke which invaded the stadium on several occasions, even forcing interrupt the meeting for a few minutes at the end of the match.
A celebration of ultras that goes to excess
This pyrotechnic demonstration was organized by the Magic Fansthe main group of supporters of ASSE, to celebrate the 20 years of the Avant-Gardeone of their components. However, the massive use of smoke bombs and other smoke pots quickly went beyond the scope of a simple celebration, considerably reducing visibility on the pitch and in the stands. The referee had no choice but to interrupt the match at the start of added time, while the smoke clears.
Disciplinary sanctions to be expected
Faced with these graves incidentsAS Saint-Étienne will have to face disciplinary sanctions from the Professional Football League. A partial or total closed session for the next home matches is strongly considered by the disciplinary committee, which will make its decision on December 18. The closed-door measures will aim to sanction this behavior that disrespects safety rules, endangering the players, officials and the public present at the stadium. Geoffroy-Guichard.
A sad episode for French football
Beyond the disciplinary aspect, this major pyrotechnic incident tarnishes the image of French football and calls into question the efforts made to clean up the stadiums and offer a safe show for families. The authorities will have to think about reinforced preventive measures to prevent such excesses from happening again, threatening the serenity and integrity of sporting events.
