Valérie Pecresse attacks Paris town hall over the new stadium

The City of Paris plans to take legal action against an amendment by the Île-de-France region which reserves 50 hectares of land for the construction of a new stadium for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). This project is perceived by the municipality as a direct threat to the future of the Parc des Princes, which PSG rents to the city until 2044. During the Paris Council, the municipal majority intends to file a contentious appeal to challenge this decision regional. Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris, remains firm in her position not to sell the stadium, despite pressure from the club’s Qatari owners. “The Park is a heritage element which belongs to all Parisians. It is not for sale, even if its current user wants to acquire it. But we also hope that PSG continues to be its user “, declared Patrick Bloche, Hidalgo’s first deputy, reaffirming the city’s desire to keep the Park in the public domain while retaining PSG as a tenant.

Former presidential candidate supports PSG

The situation is getting worse with the Île-de-France region, led by Valérie Pécresse, which supports the new stadium project. The latter reacted strongly by denouncing the position of the town hall: “Instead of trying to clip the wings of PSG through a legal procedure which has no chance of succeeding, the Paris town hall would do better to resume dialogue with our club if she wants to keep it at the Parc des Princes!” she shared on the networks. PSG, for its part, is moving forward calmly on its project, claiming to work in close collaboration with the region, and criticizing the attitude of the City of Paris. This standoff could last until the municipal elections of 2026, where a change of mayor could reshuffle the cards in this highly symbolic issue for both camps.
