The oldest member of the world tour was close to being dismasted after her forestay broke. Hit but not sunk, the sailor resumed his journey up the Atlantic.
This Friday, Jean Le Cam was in 22nd place in the Vendée Globe while Sébastien Simon finished his journey in Vendée with a third place. A performance undoubtedly below the expectations of the dean of the world tour (65 years old) who, like all his playmates, has not been spared from the problems on his monohull since the start on November 10.
A narrowly avoided dismasting
Off the coast of Brazil where he continues his journey up the South Atlantic, the skipper of the monohull Tout Commence in Finistère – Armor-lux was the victim of major damage with the breakage of his forestay, the cable which holds the mast. In a long video,«King John» reveals the extent of the damage which could have caused a dismasting. “We will have to follow”warns the sailor, keen to remain an educator, chaining the «clac, clac, clac» in his demonstration, his verbal tic as soon as he shoots a sequence.
“It was pretty hot. A major element which could have caused more significant damage than currently, because we still have the mast in place, we must not forget it. We obviously spent a long period under the main sail alone with three reefs in impossible seas. There you turn your back, pedal softly and you swallow your saliva”he explains while the winds are almost zero around his boat.
-The energy of despair makes us bounce back and move towards new horizons.
Jean Le Cam
Morale is affected but we feel that the sailor has seen others on the oceans. “And then you put things back in place little by little. You've already forgotten that yesterday was hell and today it's better. Good then becomes happiness. We find solutions to everything, so we should never despair. Even in difficult times when there is total misery, we must not forget that behind it, the energy of despair makes us bounce back and move towards new horizons. As they say, after the rain comes the good weather», Confides the favorite navigator of the French in a message full of resilience.
A reference to the 4L in conclusion
Jean Le Cam will end his video with a reference to the car he loves, the 4L and a touch of humor before continuing his circumnavigation: “We are missing a wheel from our 4L. We're going to end up with three wheels. It doesn't matter, we'll figure it out!»
