Spectacular sanction like the administrators of a piracy site. What a game-changer at a time when channels are in great difficulty facing illegal content?
Vincent Labrune repeated it again this Friday in an interview with Le Parisien, what has changed the situation in DAZN's difficulties since its purchase of Ligue 1 rights, is the importance taken by illegal viewing of matches. The high prices but also the ease of access to streaming, specialized accounts on social networks or IPTV give a head start to those who do not want to spend money to follow the matches legally. Authorities like media groups are trying to fight with their weapons against this phenomenon which has increased enormously, but is obviously not recent.
A historic streaming site has been sentenced to a very heavy fine in Spain in recent hours. This is the Roja Directa site, for a long time a reference in providing links to follow sporting events. At the end of an interminable procedure which notably affected La Liga matches from the 2014-2015 season, the pirate site was ordered to pay a fine of 31.6 million euros to Médiapro, broadcaster of the Spanish championship. A decision which confirms that at first instance, pronounced in 2022. The theft of intellectual property was thus officially recognized, and the loss of revenue for broadcasters was therefore also noted. The administrator of Roja Directa is now the subject of criminal proceedings for continuing offenses against intellectual property, and risks up to six years in prison.
Spain, through Javier Tebas, the president of its League, continues to strike hard against piracy, after closing an account followed by tens of thousands of people on Telegram recently. In France, similar measures are taken, but the condemnation of the administrators of these sites or accounts is intended to scare those who set up these illegal broadcasts.
