Match summary

The AS Saint-Étienne reserve won a valuable away victory against Bourgoin-Jallieu in a match full of twists and turns.

The start of the match was marked by a balanced duel between the two teams, with an opportunity on each side in the first quarter of an hour. After a good save from the Saint-Etienne goalkeeper in the 6th minute, the Greens gradually took control of the game. The domination materialized in the 26th minute, thanks to a goal from N'Guessan, well served by Pedro. The attacker finished with a shot from a tight angle. Despite the opposing pressure and an error by the goalkeeper from a corner in the 37th, the Stéphanois held their advantage until the break, even if a penalty not whistled for N'Guessan in the 45th caused debate.

The second half got off to a flying start. Aïki won a penalty in the 46th minute, converted by Igor Miladinovic to give the Greens a 2-0 advantage. But Bourgoin was quick to react by reducing the gap in the 48th minute. The dynamics of the match then reversed, with the locals showing themselves to be more and more threatening. A disagreement between the goalkeeper and his defense allowed Bourgoin to equalize in the 61st.

Despite the opposing pressure, Saint-Étienne was able to turn the situation around. Miladinovic, again, took advantage of a new Berjallian defensive error to score the winning goal in the 77th minute after dribbling past the goalkeeper.

The last minutes were breathtaking. Bourgoin increased his attacks, obtaining several dangerous free kicks and claiming a disputed penalty in the 87th, but the Saint-Etienne defense held firm. The Greens' 3-2 victory, won against the run of play at the end of the match, allowed them to leave with three important points.

The next meeting will be played on Sunday January 12 against the red lantern: Hauts Lyonnais. This meeting will mark the return of several former Stéphanois (Cabaton, Meyer, Gabard, Bengguedoudj…). A meeting of capital importance in the race to maintain this national 3 championship.

Reaction from Razik Nedder (ASSE coach)

“I am very proud of the football played by my players and my staff. For the leader, it is a real great victory. We showed quality in the game against the leaders of the group, who had scored 3 goals against OL and 6 against Clermont.

Our 4-4-2 diamond allowed us to take control of the match. Technically, the boys were good, and our pressing worked well.

We once again played with young players, including one born in 2007 and one in 2008, starters. This also validates the work accomplished during this first part of the season. The boys are progressing, and it’s a real satisfaction.

I have been at the head of the reserve for six seasons, and I find that the group has never been so strong. Our series continues: this is our 5th consecutive match without defeat, and that is not insignificant.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Clément and his partner, our assistant trainer, who became a father this week. Many people work in the shadows, and this is a way for me to show my gratitude to them.”
