The day after the defeat in Toulouse (2-1), AS Saint-Etienne announced that Olivier Dall'Oglio is “relieved of his duties as coach of the professional team as of today”. The technician allowed the club to return to Ligue 1 this season.
One defeat too many. Back in Ligue 1 this season, Saint-Etienne is struggling and is currently in 16th place in the championship, that of play-off player. The day after the setback against Toulouse (1-2), which won at the very end of the match, the club announced that it had parted ways with its coach Olivier Dall'Oglio.
“AS Saint-Étienne has relieved Olivier Dall'Oglio of his duties as coach of the professional team as of today,” the club wrote on its X account (formerly Twitter).
In question, according to our information: the 60-year-old technician would have focused on maintaining the team to the detriment of the development of the “prospect” project, namely young players, and would therefore have failed to assume his two missions at the same time.
The departure of Olivier Dall'Oglio is not only linked to the disappointing results of ASSE. This is an acceleration of decisions to bring about change after an “observation period” for investors. The leaders also want to “create a football culture”, a style of play and develop young people, a desire to move to a more forward style, “specific to ASSE”. On this, we were not going in the right direction. There were beginning to be disagreements over the project.
The new coach will have to stick to these principles and the appointment promises to be complicated before the Coupe de France this weekend against OM because it is necessary to negotiate with Dall'Oglio, still under contract.
Wilfried Nancy to succeed him?
Free since his departure from Montpellier in October 2022, Olivier Dall'Oglio arrived on the Saint-Etienne bench in December 2023 to take over from Laurent Batlles. After a 2023-2024 season finished in third place in Ligue 2, the Greens have returned to the elite of French football thanks to their victory against Metz in the play-offs, almost two years to the day after leaving him.
But their return to Ligue 1 does not go as they had hoped: after 15 days, the Greens are temporarily blocked and have only 4 victories for 10 defeats, including a scathing one in Nice (8-0).
“Until further notice, the supervision of the professional team will be provided by Laurent Huard, Director of the ASSE Training Center,” the club also indicates. The latter will take over his second interim – this was already the case after the departure of Laurent Batlles in December 2023 – and will take over the group from Monday. If no announcement has been made regarding the next coach, Wilfried Nancy, best coach in MLS, has been rumored for several weeks.
