It was one of the most memorable gestures in the history of football, this header by Zinedine Zidane on Marco Materazzi, during the final of the 2006 World Cup, in Munich. An event which marked the end of the career of the 1998 Ballon d'Or and left terrible memories among the French people. Today, almost two decades after this episode, the former Italian defender opens the door to a reconciliation with the French legend. In a recent interview with journalist Liam Solomon, Marco Materazzi spoke about his desire to speak with Zidane: “I'm not trying to apologize anymore but I would be happy to have a conversation with him now that so many years have passed. There would be no problem,” former Nazionale defender Marco Materazzi told Lucky Block.
Conflicting statements?
Since that famous July 9, 2006, the two men have never interacted directly, except through media statements. Materazzi, author of the equalizer in this final won by Italy on penalties, admits to having no relationship with the former French number 10. However, he seems ready to bury the hatchet. However, last October, during a visit to Super Moscato Show on RMC, Materazzi had already mentioned this possibility of a Zidane meeting. “I would be lying to you if I told you that it doesn't matter to me whether or not I meet Zinédine Zidane. Why not. I admit that I don't necessarily think about it all the time. If, ultimately, it was an ex -teammate and that we had already played together, but in this case, we have never played together so I don't see why we should necessarily meet. I think that he also thinks the same thing.” declared Marco Materazzi who seems to have changed his mind since. It remains to be seen whether Zinedine Zidane will give a response to this proposal or not.
