Currently under contract with PSG until next June, Luis Enrique seems well on his way to signing an extension if we are to believe the words of his president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi on Thursday, on RMC Sport. The Spanish coach could therefore break a historic record for longevity under the Qatari era at PSG if he were to have a third full season on the Parisian bench next season.
It is a fact, the PSG has had difficulty stabilizing the coaching position since the club was bought by the Qatarin 2011. No less than eight different coaches have succeeded one another in barely 13 years of era QSI in the capital, and this instability is often blamed on the Qatari leaders of PSG, particularly in their quest for the Champions League. Questioned Thursday evening at the microphone of RMC Sport in the show Rothen ignites on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Campus PSGthe president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi has made an announcement that appears to indicate a historic change in policy at the club.
Luis Enrique towards an extension… and a record?
Al-Khelaïfi took stock of the future of Luis Enriqueappointed in the summer of 2023 to the bench PSGand whose initial contract runs until next June. And the Parisian boss indicates that he should extend his coach, regardless of the outcome this season in the Champions League: “ We won't change anything. Whether we go out or win, it's exactly the same thing. I said it, we have a lot of confidence in our coach. He does a very good job with Luis Campos. Will they extend it? I have confidence yes, that's what we want (…) The Champions League? It's not a goal. But I want to say one thing, we play every match to win it. But that’s not the goal of putting that pressure on. We have a young team. We need to be realistic. We didn't have any luck with the draw either. But it's football », blurted out the president of PSG.
No coach has survived beyond two and a half years
Luis Enrique should therefore extend and, barring disaster, honor next year his third full season on the bench PSGa historic record under the era QSIsince none of its predecessors managed to be maintained for more than two and a half years.
