Erling Haaland negotiates record salary in Premier League history

Erling Haaland is discussing an extension of his contract with Manchester City, for a salary which would be higher than that of his Belgian teammate, Kevin de Bruyne.

Manchester City and Erling Haaland are closing in on a historic deal that would make the Norwegian striker the highest-paid player in the history of the English league. The Mancunian club would offer its 24-year-old star striker, according to the Daily Stara weekly salary of 500,000 pounds (600,000 euros, or €31.2 million per year), far exceeding Kevin De Bruyne's current emoluments (€24.8 million/year).

This new contract would extend Haaland's commitment until 2029, i.e. two additional years compared to his current lease which provides him with the close equivalent of 23 million euros per year; more or less depending on the exchange rate. Recent discussions in Norway with the player's family and his agent Rafaela Pimenta were positive according to the English tabloid.

Record salary and increased release clause for Erling Haaland

However, one point remains unresolved: the current release clause of 150 million pounds (180 million euros). The club wants to remove it, while the Haaland camp insists on maintaining it. A compromise could be found by increasing it to 200 million pounds (240 million euros), a valuation more in line with the current market and the constant interest of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Saint-Germain.

Since his arrival in the summer of 2022 for 60 million pounds (72 million euros), the Norwegian has panicked the scorers with 105 goals in 113 matches in all competitions, including 75 goals in 77 Premier League matches. Double top scorer in the reigning championship, Haaland has already won two league titles and a historic treble with the Citizens.
