Raphael Varane has decided to hang up his boots, the former French international explained his decision in a message on social networks. If Erik ten Hag regretted the retirement of his former player at Manchester United, he is convinced that he will shine in a new life.

Raphael Varane has officially said goodbye to professional football. The former French national team central defender announced his decision to end his career on Wednesday.

“I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change anything. (…) I’ve won more than I could have dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I’m proud of having remained true to my principles of sincerity and trying to leave the world better than I found it. I hope I’ve made you all proud,” wrote the 2018 world champion on
Instagram.

“For his post-career, I am sure he will have a lot of success.”

Among the many tributes paid to Varane, that of Erik Ten Hag, his former coach at Manchester United, stands out. The Dutch coach considered the retirement of the former Red Devil premature, but he remains convinced that the Frenchman will bounce back.

“It’s very sad to see him end his career at the age of 31,” regretted the Red Devils coach before continuing: “He could have played a few more years, but he had an incredible career. I have great admiration for him. He won everything and I have so much respect for what he achieved in football. For his post-career, I am sure he will have a lot of success in other areas, because he is a very good person and very intelligent.”
