A quick start and a cool finish, then a confident penalty shortly afterwards – for Kylian Mbappé the spell is broken: Real Madrid’s new superstar has scored his first two goals in Spain’s La Liga at the fourth attempt and put the Royals on track.
The final result against the still winless Betis Sevilla was 2-0 (0-0), and thanks to Mbappé, Real climbed to second place in the table with eight points. They are four points behind arch-rivals FC Barcelona, who started the season perfectly with four wins under coach Hansi Flick. However, Real at least avoided losing another point after two draws against Mallorca and Las Palmas.
Heel assist from Valverde
The stars again struggled for a long time, and Mbappé only had half-chances at first. In the middle of the second half, Fede Valverde set up the Frenchman with a heel, Mbappé ran after the ball and shot straight away. His eighth shot of the evening brought the first goal (67th minute), and Spain had not looked at Mbappé’s empty goal tally since 10:58 p.m. A little later, Betis goalkeeper Rui Silva brought down Real’s Vini Junior, and Mbappé safely converted the penalty (75th minute).
The 25-year-old fulfilled a childhood dream in the summer when he moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Madrid, and things got off to a good start for the superstar: In the European Super Cup against Atalanta Bergamo, Mbappé scored the final goal for the Champions League winners to make it 2-0. In La Liga, however, Mbappé was the face of a false start – until he scored twice against Betis.
Raphina outstanding at Barca’s goal fest
The day before, former German national coach Hansi Flick had celebrated FC Barcelona’s fourth victory in their fourth league match and at the same time a goal-fest.
With the 7-0 (3-0) win against Real Valladolid, the Catalans, who will face FC Bayern (October 23) and Borussia Dortmund (December 11) in the league phase of the Champions League, also maintained their commanding lead in the Primera Division.
Raphinha scores three times
Raphinha, who scored three goals, gave Barca an early lead (20th minute), and Robert Lewandowski extended it shortly afterwards with his fourth goal of the season (24th minute) after an assist from young star Lamine Yamal. Jules Kounde increased the lead before half-time (45th+2). Lewandowski and Yamal then provided the assists for Raphinha’s further goals (64th/72nd minute). The outstanding Brazilian then set up the goals for Dani Olmo (83rd minute) and Fernan Torres (85th minute).
