Xherdan Shaqiri’s return to Switzerland is crowned with success. Six months after returning home and three days after being promoted to captain of FC Basel which he carries on his broad shoulders, he does not forget, however, that he will one day put away his crampons: he has decided to become a shareholder minority of FC Rapperswil-Jona.
“By joining Rapperswil, I want to prepare for my post-career,” explains the former jewel of the Swiss team with 125 caps, aged 32, on the website of the Saint-Welsh club. This includes knowledge of club structures. For me, the FCRJ is perfect for this. It is the ideal size, has a beautiful stadium and a long tradition.”
This invaluable spotlight for Rapperswil-Jona, which aims in the medium term for a return to the Challenge League, was facilitated by the long-standing friendship between president Rocco Delli Colli and Shaqiri. “He is one of the public’s favorites, a top player but also a wonderful person who is coming to us,” notes the strong man of the club who plays at the Grünfeld Stadion. Xherdan has many strengths. But the biggest thing is his modesty. He always remained true to himself despite his worldwide fame and never forgot where he came from.”
In its press release, Rapperswil-Jona specifies that this arrival of Shaqiri, who had spent the last twelve years abroad, was discussed with FC Basel and the Swiss Football League, excluding any conflict of interest. A few days ago, the club announced the commitment of Erdin, Shaqiri’s older brother, and Arber Sakiri, his advisor.
