Messi remains noncommittal on retirement after hat-trick against Bolivia

16th October 2024 – (Buenos Aires) Lionel Messi has stated that he has not established a “date or deadline” for his retirement from international football, despite leading Argentina to a resounding 6-0 victory over Bolivia in their World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old star delivered a standout performance at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, netting the tenth hat-trick of his international career and providing two assists.

“It’s very nice to come here, to feel the affection of the people; it’s exciting when they shout my name,” Messi remarked post-match. “We all enjoy this period that we’re experiencing and the connection with the people. We love being here, playing in Argentina with all these fans, and we’re pleased with both the win and the atmosphere.”

When questioned about his future in the sport, Messi replied candidly: “I haven’t set a date or deadline; I just want to enjoy all of this. I’m excited to be here and feel the affection of the people because I know these could be my last games.”

He added, “What drives me is enjoying this, being happy where I am, and being with my teammates. Despite my age, when I’m here, it feels like I’m a kid because of the joy I experience. As long as I feel good and can continue helping the team, I will keep enjoying it.”

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni expressed his hope that Messi would continue to play for as long as possible. “During the game, I sat next to [assistant coach] Pablo Aimar and said, ‘This is wonderful.’ Watching him play brings me immense joy,” Scaloni noted. “He never ceases to surprise us. Let him play until he can no longer go on; that’s all I ask because it’s a pleasure to see him on the pitch.”
