SGS Essen takes the lead against Frankfurt

A real top team, Eintracht from Frankfurt, came to Hafenstrasse on Sunday (October 6th). The Frankfurters even defeated VfL Wolfsburg last week and clearly, 3-0. The task was correspondingly difficult for SGS Essen, especially since Frankfurt was still unbeaten – and remained so even after the duel against the Schönebeckers. The Essen women even took the lead. After Frankfurt dominated the game in the early stages of the game, Essen received a penalty after 18 minutes. Senß had pulled Sterner’s jersey, Kowalski converted to take the lead. Ten minutes before half-time the SGS could have even increased the score, but Sterner’s header only hit the post after a corner.

SGS Essen misses a chance and loses

In the second half the guests flexed their muscles. National player Laura Freigang equalized from close range (61st). With a quarter of an hour to go, Kowalski almost put Essen back in the lead, but her shot was cleared at the last second. While the SGS could not reward themselves for a committed performance, the Frankfurters punished it coldly. First Reuteler headed in the lead (83′), then Freigang added to make it 3-1. The reward for a lot of effort that Eintracht put in.

Nevertheless, the SGS Essen’s form curve is pointing upwards, after the first win of the season in Jena last week, Markus Högner’s team had a sniff of a surprise success, but in the end there was perhaps a bit of luck missing. This leaves four points in the account. A much more doable task awaits next. On Friday (October 11th) we go to Potsdam.
