FC Barcelona were able to get their first three points in the UEFA Champions League with its new format last night as they got a win over the Swiss side BSC Young Boys.
Several Barcelona players stood out as the Blaugranes scored five past their opponents. Inigo Martinez gave an assist and also scored his first-ever goal in the blue and garnet shirt.
Similarly, it was also a night to remember for Robert Lewandowski, who scored a brace on the night. As Mundo Deportivo has reported, his two goals have some historical significance as well, as he has tied one of the club’s biggest legends in one particular aspect.
With his brace, Robert Lewandowski matched Lionel Messi for the highest goal-scoring average in UEFA Champions League history among players who have netted at least 50 goals in the competition.
Both Lewandowski and Messi boast an impressive 0.79 goals per game. Right behind them is Cristiano Ronaldo, with a close average of 0.77 goals per game, while Ruud van Nistelrooy and Karim Benzema hold the fourth and fifth spots with 0.77 and 0.59 goals per game, respectively.
In addition to this, Lewandowski is also the second player to have scored the most goals in the competition after turning 30 years old. The Pole has scored 51 goals after turning 30, and only trails Ronaldo in this regard, who has scored 68 goals after reaching this age.
For Barcelona, this match saw Lewandowski score in 50 of his 105 appearances for the club. Only five players over the age of 30 have scored in more games for the Catalans: Lionel Messi (110 games), Luis Suárez (75), César Rodríguez (59), Enrique Castro “Quini” (54), and Sándor Kocsis (52).
