A much-maligned player, but important given the injuries to his position, central defender Inigo Martinez could have left Barça this summer. However, he revealed how his coach Hansi Flick convinced him to stay.
Scorer this Tuesday in the Champions League against Young Boys (5-0), Inigo Martinez is gaining confidence. Yet much criticized, the player is an indisputable starter for Hansi Flick given the injuries to Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo at central defender.
However, the experienced player in La Liga, who played for Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao, could have left Catalonia this summer. Targeted by clubs from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, it was Hansi Flick who was decisive in his decision to continue the adventure.
At Fabrizio Romano, Inigo Martinez revealed the inside of his summer “I did the pre-season with the team, and Hansi Flick said he trusted me, and asked me to stay. He told me: believe me, stay here, in Barcelona. In the end, it was the right decision.”
The Basque still has some time before the return of his two friends to prove that he has his place and that he is not just a simple spare wheel, especially on Sunday at Alaves, to raise his head in La Liga.
