CATS – It’s a new cohabitation that begins at 10 Downing Street. After welcoming the new Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the beginning of July, Larry, the cat of Number 10will have to deal with another roommate: a Siberian kitten adopted by the children of the head of government.

Larry, who has already served under six prime ministers, arrived in Downing Street on February 15, 2011, with one mission: to rid the place of rodents.

But since then, the “Chief Mousecatcher” 17-year-old has become a real attraction and one of the most famous cats in the world. His account @Number10cat (unofficial) on X has more than 900,000 followers.

Larry, a difficult roommate

Known for being awkward with those who dare to venture into his territory, Larry has already issued a warning to the newcomer on X (formerly Twitter): “The kitten will BE ACCOUNTABLE to Larry”.

The message came as Keir Starmer had just announced that his 13-year-old daughter had picked up the Siberian kitten on Monday, September 2. The Starmer family already had a cat, Jojo, and the British press was worried on Tuesday about how the three felines would get along.

But for the Prime Minister, questioned by the BBC about the new arrival, the problem lies elsewhere: “The only door out of our new apartment is armoured, so having a cat flap is proving somewhat difficult.”

Keir Starmer’s predecessor, Rishi Sunak, had a dog Nova. According to his wife, Akshata Murty, Nova and Larry had “heated exchanges”but it’s Larry who “had the upper hand”.

Authorities are ready if he dies: if the plan for Queen Elizabeth II’s death was code-named « London Bridge »the one for the tabby and white cat was named « Larry Bridges ».
