Pravin Gordhan, an anti-apartheid activist and key political figure in post-apartheid South Africa who was hailed for his fight against corruption, died on September 13, 2024 at the age of 75, his family announced. He had left politics after the May legislative elections to devote himself to his health and family.

Former minister Pravin Gordhan died at the age of 75 on September 13, 2024, after being admitted to hospital with cancer. He leaves behind the memory of a man driven by the desire to serve his country and to be uncompromising in the face of the excesses of power.

After studying pharmacy, then years of fighting against apartheid and for the cause of the Indian community, Pravin Gordhan contributed to the negotiations during the transition, and then became head of the South African tax authorities.

In Finance, he leaves his mark on the country

Pravin Gordhan spoke out loudly against corruption and later testified before the commission of inquiry into state capture. He would serve one last time in Cyril Ramaphosa’s government as Minister of Public Enterprises before retiring.
