POLITICS – One year of ineligibility. This is the sanction pronounced by the Constitutional Council this Friday, September 13 against the senator of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, Annick Girardin, who had been in office since October 2, 2023.

Seized by the National Commission for Campaign Accounts and Political Financing, the Sages looked into the campaign account of the former minister of François Hollande and Emmanuel Macron, elected in the first round of the senatorial elections with 51.3% of the vote. The commission had in fact rejected the campaign account of the elected official… who had not, in fact, taken the trouble to open one.

However, as the Constitutional Council points out, any candidate ” is required to establish a campaign account when he has obtained at least 1% of the votes cast or if he has benefited from donations from individuals. »

One year of ineligibility

The senator, a member of the Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon political party Cap sur l’avenir, argued that ” the particularity of the senatorial election in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon “, and the fact that his financial agent proceeded ” upon opening a bank account establishing that it has not incurred any expenditure or received any income ” in March 2024, outside the imposed deadlines.

A failure which results in Annick Girardin’s ineligibility for any mandate for a period of one year from this decision, and which also causes her automatic resignation from her mandate as senator.

The two other candidates in the running in these elections, namely Jacqueline Cormier-André and Patrick Lebailly, have also been criticized for their campaign accounts. The Constitutional Council will soon have to give its decision concerning them.
