Published recently at the European Society of Cardiology conference, this research shows that Patients with type 1 diabetes, especially those aged 30 to 40, are up to 20 times more likely to die from cardiac arrest than healthy individuals of the same age.

This risk, higher than what specialists suspected until now, also concerns patients with type 2 diabetes, a form of the disease often associated with factors such as obesity or physical inactivity. These latter run a risk of cardiac death six times higher than people without diabetes. Although the link between diabetes and heart disease is well known, this study highlights the underestimated extent of this danger among young adults.

Experts agree that these results change the way which is perceived as the medical monitoring of diabetic patients, especially young people.

He stresses that patients must be given a more intensive cardiological monitoring to prevent potentially fatal complications.
