The marketing of a restyled version of the Tesla Model Y necessarily has an immediate impact on the second-hand value of previous examples.
At Tesla as elsewhere, this discount is variable and responds to several factors. Minor restyling, such as a slight aesthetic change or technical adjustments, has a slight impact on the rating of previous versions. On the other hand, a major overhaul including a new design, innovative technologies or an evolution of engines and batteries can considerably affect their attractiveness. Therein lies the subtlety because the Model Y is located between the two.
The technical platform is unchanged, so the silhouette is fixed. Motors and batteries evolve, but not structurally, only with updates. We are not dealing with a new Model Y, but with a modernized car. The aesthetic adjustments, particularly in terms of lighting signatures, are however marked enough that we can immediately identify the new and the “old” one. In the passenger compartment, however, the evolution is much more marked with sound insulation and very clear progress, better quality and better adjusted materials and the appearance of a passenger screen. Between a 2024 vintage and a Juniper, there is a real gulf, as was the case for the Model 3.
Should we still buy cash in 2025?
There is therefore an immediate impact on the value of first generation models. Recent cars, less than two years old, are the most affected by the release of the restyled version. These models, still high in value, suffer a depreciation which can be estimated at 10 to 15% based on the experience of the Model 3. But Tesla has of course anticipated this by lowering its prices over the last 12 months, The impact is therefore less but not painless. If you opted for an LOA or LLD, no problem, but if you paid cash you will feel it pass at the time of resale! On the other hand, older models have already absorbed a large part of their depreciation and are logically little affected.
