Huddersfield Giants owner Ken Davy has announced his plan to buy The Shay Stadium in Halifax. His club could move there as early as 2026!
What if the birthplace of Rugby League no longer had any clubs? It might sound crazy said like that. But the project seems more and more real. Last year, Giants owner Ken Davy told the English press that he wanted to build a new stadium for his club. With 24,300 seats, John Smith's Stadium, current home of the Giants, often sounds hollow on game days. And a year later, the English billionaire walked his words.
According to Yorkshire Live, Ken Davy has made an offer to buy The Shay Stadium, which is located a 20-minute drive from his current stadium. The goal being to temporarily move the Giants there, who would share the enclosure with the Halifax Panthers (Championship).
With 14,000 seats, the stadium could undergo a major facelift in order to be brought up to Super League standards. The installation of a hybrid lawn and a drainage system are a top priority for the billionaire, who revealed his plan in a press release:
I believe that bringing this stadium up to Super League standard will enhance the enjoyment for fans on match days, and encourage more people to come and support the Halifax Panthers and FC Halifax. For the Giants, although the renovation is expected to be expensive, it would be an ideal solution for us as we progress our project to build a new stadium in Huddersfield.
If Mr. Davy's takeover offer is accepted, the Giants could leave Huddersfield as early as 2026… But only to come back later.
