Top scorer in the Top 14 with 10 tries in 9 matchesGaël Dréan has established himself as one of the most effective players this season. However, a few weeks before the start of the 6 Nations Tournament, the Toulon winger keeps his head on his shoulders. Despite his remarkable performances, he prefers to concentrate on his immediate objectives with the RCT.
“I don’t feel particularly stronger this season”
Questioned by RMC, Dréan wanted to temper the excitement around his name. “Honestly, I don’t really think about it“, he confides about a potential call-up with the Blues. “We have important matches every weekend with Toulon. I’m focused on what’s happening here. […] I wouldn’t say I feel stronger. I think it’s people who focus a lot on these figures, these stats, these tests.“
The 24-year-old Breton winger prefers to put his performances down to a more fluid game from the RCT this season. “Maybe we’re better able to keep the balloons out of the way. I took more chances, but I don’t feel particularly stronger by scoring these tries.“
A progression through the seasons
Dréan, however, did not wait for this season to show his potential. For three years, he works to perfect his game. “If I had to choose just one point of improvement, it would probably be about being as clean as possible and making as few mistakes as possible.”he explains in Var-matin.
However, everything was not simple. “I came away frustrated from several matches at the start of the season, especially against Clermont and Racing, where I did not touch a single ball. From there, I promised myself to think more about the attack, to be more incisive, to offer myself better.“
A dream without pressure
If he dreams of the XV of France like any rugby player, Dréan refuses to be distracted by rumors. “I avoid listening to everything anyone says. If tomorrow I don’t score in three games, no one will talk about me anymore.“For now, its objective remains clear: continue to shine with Toulon. “I remain focused on what we are putting in place, on my personal development. If one day it comes up for me… we’ll see.“
With his finishing profile and his consistency, Gaël Dréan has everything to seduce Fabien Galthié. But, true to his philosophy, he prefers to move forward step by step. At this rate, it may be the XV of France that will soon come knocking on their door. But the competition is tough. The Bordelais Penaud and Bielle-Biarrey are installed on the wings of the Blues. While his RCT teammate Gabin Villière also scored valuable points.
