Top 14: Tensions at UBB, Urios' new explanation

Christophe Urios' career was marked by failure at Union -Bègles, which he left after alienating a few players on his team. Now at ASM Clermont Auvergne, he returned to this chapter, notably clarifying things with Matthieu Jalibert and Cameron Woki.

A few years ago, Christophe Urios was considered the best French technician, notably ahead of Ugo Line or Fabien Galthié. His arrival atUBB therefore seemed to be a promise of success. But nothing went as planned, since between Covid and disappointing results the Bordelo-Béglais suffered one set of failures.

“I had no problem with them, apart from the fact that they were not at their level”

This led to a departure of Christophe Urios in November 2022, notably following tensions with certain players. At the time, there was talk of internal problems with Matthieu Jalibert et Cameron Wokibut the main person concerned insisted on denying these rumors. “ I had no problem with them, other than the fact that they were not at their level » explained the man who now heads theASM Clermont Auvergnein a long interview given to Southwest.

“When I signed for Clermont, Matthieu was the first person to send me a message”

« When you want to be champion, your best players have to be at the top. I told them, perhaps awkwardly » continued Christophe Urios, ensuring that he had a good relationship with Jalibert et Woki. « When I signed for Clermont, I think Matthieu was the first person to send me a message of encouragement. I enjoy seeing Cameron every time I meet him. Everyone thinks there was a problem with them, that was not the case (…) I realized that some were individual leaders and not collective leaders. Things were not going well in Bordeaux, I chose the status quo and ultimately, it blew me in the face ».
