“We don’t know what to do anymore”: this residential area of Toulon is desperately looking for a doctor

Shoemakers are often the worst shod. In a neighborhood that houses the regional health agency, Sainte-Anne hospital, some residents no longer know how to take care of themselves.

Last week, during the meeting of the Claret local interest committee, a resident from Valbourdin even questioned the elected officials on this subject.

“The last GP in our neighbourhood is ill. He will not return to work. We don’t know what to do. How are we going to get treatment?” A concern that found an echo among the residents present in the room.

A generic problem

Although the problem is not specific to this part of , it is becoming critical here, according to local residents.

“We know that a number of doctors are going to retire, said deputy mayor Geneviève Levy. It’s not really our responsibility, even if we can always raise awareness among the medical profession.”

A health center to attract professionals?

Part of the solution may be found on the side of the coal mines island. An industrial wasteland located at the bottom of Avenue de Claret.

In this building, the neighboring pharmacists would like to create a health center. Vanessa Hanna, Stéphane Hanna and Édouard Allemand have been maturing this project for several months now. They are on the front line to see how difficult it is to get treatment, “as everywhere in the territory”.

The idea here would be to bring together several health professionals in a multidisciplinary approach. “There could be doctors but also nurses, physiotherapists, podiatrists…”explains Vanessa Hanna.

The three partners assure us that such an establishment is… “win-win”Professionals are increasingly attracted to this type of grouping which facilitates their procedures.

As for patients, not only do they find a space to receive treatment but also several disciplines in the same place.

“Today, the town hall is supporting us. But not everything is in its hands. The procedures are long but are following their course.”says the pharmacist.

No date has yet been given for their completion.
