It promises to be the event series of this new school year. This Monday, September 16, France 2 is broadcasting the first two episodes of Fortune de France, its new historical family saga that takes us straight to the 16th century, to a France torn apart by religious wars.
A historical family saga
Adapted from the first volume of the eponymous saga by Robert Merle, Fortune de France follows the daily life of the castle of Mespech, in Périgord. Behind the ramparts, surrounded by a dangerous, hostile and intolerant world, the Siorac family fights for its survival and its convictions.
Jean, the patriarch of the family played by Nicolas Duvauchelle, and Isabelle, his wife and mother of his two children played by Lucie Debay, love each other as much as on the first day. Unfortunately, one is a Protestant, and must hide his faith, while the other is a fervent Catholic.
Although the couple supports each other even in adversity, the religious wars raging in France will gradually affect them. They love each other and tear each other apart for their ideas, under the gaze of their sons, Pierre and François, and the people of the castle with whom they live.
A mirror of our society
Created by Christopher Thompson, who also directed and co-wrote with Fabrice Roger-Lacan, Fortune de France is a fascinating historical fresco which, by telling us about the France of yesterday, questions us about our times.
