DANGER – A battery problem led BMW to recall 140,000 Mini Cooper SEs worldwide in early September

Not really a “mini” recall. The BMW group announced on Monday that it was recalling several tens of thousands of electric vehicles of the Mini brand, sold all over the world. This concerns precisely 140,000 Mini Cooper SE produced between 2018 and 2024, of which 39,000 were sold in Germany and only 200 in France, according to Caravans.

The problem mentioned is serious, but it has not yet caused any accidents or injuries. “A fire in the vehicle, even when parked, cannot be ruled out,” Mini explains in its press release. A defect in the battery of the electric car can indeed cause a fire to start, even when stationary. Two cases of fire have been recorded in the United States and Germany.

Update and repairs

Owners of affected vehicles are advised to visit their nearest Mini or BMW workshop as soon as possible, reports Squeeze Lemon. A software update will be made to fix the issue, and to add an improved diagnostic function to enable insulation faults to be detected reliably.

If a problem is then detected, the battery will automatically discharge to less than 30%, in order to avoid overheating. The driver will then be informed of the malfunction(…) - 20minutes
