In Togo, several civil society organizations were in an awareness meeting this Sunday, September 15 in the afternoon in Vogan, about fifty kilometers from Lomé. These organizations continue to mobilize against the new Constitution and are wondering about the future.

The text, promulgated by the president Faure Gnassingbe on May 7, was adopted by the outgoing deputies several months after the end of their mandate. It establishes a parliamentary regime and therefore abolishes the direct presidential election. The Togo is currently in a transitional period, between the IVe and the Fifth Republic. A period of one year is planned for everything to be put in place.

But questions remain unanswered for 2025, recalls David Dosseh, from the Togo Debout citizen front: ” For us, this will be a key moment to ask whether we are part of a model where it is a parliamentary regime with a life presidency, or is it a return to the constitutional order? ? And in this case, what do we do? ? Are we organizing a presidential election? ? Will President Faure run for a fifth term? ? »
