Mexico celebrates its 214th anniversary of independence on Monday. To commemorate the event, tradition dictates that the Mexican head of state delivers a speech from the balcony of the presidential palace and shouts a shout. In Mexico City’s Zocalo Square, Andrés Manuel López Obrador will participate in the celebration for the last time as president.

On September 16, 1810, the story goes that in the village of Dolores, the priest Miguel Hidalgo gave a speech in a parish, and shouted, “Viva Mexico”, for the start of an armed uprising that would end with the independence of the country and the end of New Spain. It is this event that leads the president of Mexico to shout from the balcony of the presidential palace every year.
