American soccer player Alex Morgan played her final professional game on Sunday, after spending 13 final minutes on the field at home with the San Diego Wave against the North Carolina Courage in the US Women’s Championship.

Pregnant with her second child

Thirteen minutes as the number 13 she wore on her back marked by a missed penalty in the 10th minute, before leaving to cheers. The 35-year-old striker had announced her imminent retirement on Thursday after revealing she was pregnant with her second child.

The double world champion (2015, 2019) and Olympic champion (2012) with the United States retires at the head of 123 goals in selection, fifth best total of the American women’s team. The player, also known for her commitment to gender equality in sport, spent a season in France, in Lyon (2016-2017). She won with OL a treble championship French-Coupe de France-Champions League.

“What a ride it’s been,” she said after the game. “I want to thank my teammates. You guys have constantly challenged me every day and made me better. I want to thank my family who have supported me so much, sacrificed so much for me. I love all of you, all 95 of you here tonight. And the fans. You’ve pushed me to be the best that I can be every day. You’ve pushed me to be the best soccer player, the best mom, the best person that I can be.”

“There have been so many incredible moments in my career, but this one, this last moment that I share on the field with you, I will cherish forever. So, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
